Summer Updates

It's been some time since I've blogged here but please know that all is well. We have launched a wonderful new website and have jumped enthusiastically into Web 2.0 with our twitter page and our social networking platform iZoca.

Our membership continues to rise dramatically as are our tight bonds with each other coming together in times of uncertainty. We have lots of resources and tips to share. Hope to see you at one of our upcoming meetings and events! We're not just there for you during tough times of deployment either. We're supporting each other with our children's military service from basic training right into retirement and on as veterans.

Please remember what an important support group, foremost, we are for our members. Since our chapter's beginning in the Capital Region in  February 2007, we have had one KIA mom in the process of joining our chapter, at least 6 IED attacks on our children, many near misses, and many families seeking support as our children continue to  fight the war on terrorism in all parts of the world. Our children range from young newly enlisted, to commissioned, to seasoned military. There is no rank among us. We are all together in supporting our children and our country in this Global War on Terrorism. As our chapter grows, so does the concern and support that is required of us. Thank you all for continuing our heartfelt support to our BSM families!!

Veterans Day 2008

Veterans Day 2008... Already here... A sincere appreciation and debt of gratitude for our veterans for proudly serving our country and defending our freedom!! Thank You Veterans!!

Our chapter packed and mailed around 800 Freedom Boxes to our deployed troops from or with ties to the Capital Region area in the past two weeks. We enjoyed an outpouring of appreciation and support for our troops and veterans. Our mothers were sincerely appreciative of that as our sons and daughters continue to fight this global war on terrorism.

On a most personal note, my family was thrilled to welcome home our son, Jeff, from his first deployment (15 months!) to Iraq. He will be stop-lossed, and after a twelve month reprieve, will be deployed to Afghanistan to continue serving there. God Bless him, our troops, our country, and you, for supporting these brave American Heroes!!!

Fall Updates

Our chapter continues to grow. We gained five new members just this week. We are proud that we are making a difference and provide support to our military families as well as our troops and our veterans.  We've also been busy at the airport welcoming our American heroes home-this is by far our favorite thing to do! Our next event will be a giant troop drive at Colonie Center where we plan to fill and ship 500 Holiday Freedom Boxes to our deployed troops. Kickoff will be on Saturday, November 1st at noon at Center Court. Hope you'll be able to stop by! We are honored to be marching in the Grand Marshall's Division of the Albany Veterans Day Parade again this year as we pay tribute to our veterans-past and present. A good weather forecast would make it perfect! Hope to see you there!

We are very pleased by the results of our 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Thunderhart at Sunny Hill. Thanks to Peggy for an awesome job organizing this event again this year!

Much was accomplished at our BSM National Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We were able to update our Constitution and By-Laws and made some great connections with other Blue Star moms across the country.

We're busy now planning our second annual America Supports You  Freedom Walk on Sunday, September 7th at 10:30 am. Two hook and ladder fire trucks will be displaying huge American Flags for us to walk under as we remember those lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. We will also be honoring our firefighters, law enforcement, first responders, and our military, past and present, who protect us today.

In October, we're planning a bus trip to West Point to give the Wounded Warriors there a picnic and gifts from us to help them make their stay more comfortable with hopes of a speedy recovery and sincere thanks and gratitude from us for their service to our country.

July

We've been extremely busy these past few months in our chapter. We marched in three area Memorial Day Parades paying tribute to our fallen American heroes. Many of us helped serve a Fourth of July picnic to our inpatient veterans at the Stratton VA Hospital in honor of their service to our nation. Our second annual golf tournament held on July 12th was a great success with double the number of golfers from last year. It was a lot of fun as well. We're looking forward to our next big event on September 7th, which will be an America Supports You Freedom Walk, in commemoration of September 11, 2001. This will be our second annual Freedom Walk in which we hope to bring our greater Capital Region community together in remembrance of those killed and honor our military and first responders.

Honors

On May 10th, the annual Military Ball was held in Albany honoring our chapter of the Blue Star Mothers. We were very appreciative of this. All those attending reported having a great time. On Saturday night, May 17th, we will again be honored, this time by the Schenectady Veterans Organizations at their Armed Forces Day dinner. We have a lot of our members going and are humbled by this honor. Saturday is Armed Forces Day, a day to pay tribute to and salute our troops who sacrifice so much for our freedoms and way of life. Next week we will begin our Memorial Day tributes and parades in memory of our fallen American heroes.

Our chapter was well represented today in support of the 2nd Annual Captain Timothy J. Moshier Memorial 5k Run/Walk. Next year we hope to field a "Team Blue Star" so get your running/walking shoes ready. Karen has graciously volunteered to organize this for us. It is truly inspiring how the Moshier and McKee families have risen from their loss to pay tribute to Tim and also raise money for the Gold Star Family Support Center, The Fisher House, and the Captain Timothy J. Moshier Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Wednesday, April 9th, marks the fifth year anniversary of the day Saddam Hussein fled Baghdad. Iraq Liberation Day is a day to remember our fallen troops, our POW/MIA, and our troops now serving in this War on Terror.  Along with many Veterans Service Organizations, The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is responding to the call for national recognition of this day. We will be represented at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery hosted by the Adjutants General of the United States. Later that evening the Ambassador of Iraq, on behalf of the Government and People of Iraq, will be hosting a dinner in honor of the families of our Iraq fallen heroes. All across America, citizens are asked to honk their car horns at 17:00 H, Eastern Daylight Time, at the same time the Dutch Carillion strikes the hour at Arlington National Cemetery for this National Remembrance.
